Hands down, best fries I have ever tasted and I know I’m dramatic (thanks Scorpio) but I’m not lying. I’m a total foodie. Usually, I know a place is good by their appetizers or sides. I like to know what the rest of my night is looking like, a total waste of time or a delight to look forward to. So when I saw the fries were seasoned and I asked the waitress if I could have a side of ranch, she gave an approving KNOWING nod and soon my taste buds were on a trip to heaven.
SO….what Is this magical place you speak of? It’s called the Caged Bird in Dupont circle. But the fries aren’t the only thing there that’s demands my money. It’s also the ONLY black owned joint in ALL of the Dupont DC area. Yep, completely black owned and completely black staffed. The owner took pride in the fact that black money built this special, special place.
They serve all the standard cocktails and some unique ones as well, wine and beer (including local brewer Sankofa Beer Company). The bar and lounge also offers bomb food dishes like grilled shrimp and salmon, tacos, jerk chicken sliders, and house special Caged Bird Chicken Sliders which include braised collards, macaroni and cheese, yams, and barbecue pulled chicken. Honestly, you could eat a whole bucket of fries and be good for the night.
Oh and by the way, I’m a sucker for great service. The bartenders are extremely friendly, helpful and fun to converse with. The owner came and sat down with me and we had a great conversation about black enterprise, building businesses and wealth, and wanting to share this information with his people. This is a lounge where you can definitely come chill and have a great time. They also hot a multitude of cultural, artistic and interesting events, give them a follow on instagram @cagedbirddc to keep up to date on all these exciting events.
Head on over to check it out: The Caged Bird is open from 11 a.m.midnight on Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m.11 p.m. on Sunday. (It’s closed on Monday.)
